In the Spirit of Valentine's Day...

Chris and I are going on almost three years of dating. And while for most couples this would be a point where they are very comfortable in their relationship, it is a little different for Chris and I. You see, for about 2.5 years we really learned how to talk, how to support each other verbally, and how to be in love with each other long distance.

Recently, with my move to Huntsville, this has all changed. And it is almost like starting over. We are learning how to coordinate "us" time versus "family" time. We are learning how we can best help each other. And we are learning how to love each other in a whole new atmosphere. To be honest, it hasn't been a completely smooth transition.

Sometimes we get frustrated. Sometimes I hate cooking (actually, we will make that all the time). Sometimes I wish Chris was done with school. Sometimes I wish we could hang out more than we do. Sometimes I feel like we are too much alike.

But, all of these selfish feelings have taught me that sometimes we need to grow. And sometimes we are placed in situations where growing is nurtured and encouraged. I, personally, am learning the art of compromising (I did say, 'learning'!), the art of listening, and the art of loving unconditionally. In the process, I have grown as an individual.

I'm sorry I won't be with you on Valentine's Day, Chris (I'm heading to Arizona this weekend). But, I want you to know that this year, my gift to you won't be a physical gift, it will be so much more than that. This year I am giving you my renewed spirit to face the challenges of our relationship. I will try to be more understanding of your commitments and respect the decisions you make. I will try to be more helpful wherever I can, and remind you every day that you mean the world to me.

I love you Chris, Happy Valentines Day!
